Time Travel Through Minecraft

Walk through the Newburgh that was.

Urban Renewal tore down much of downtown Newburgh. We are rebuilding it as it stood, block by block, in Minecraft. Explore it from anywhere. Help us finish it.

The project

A city taken apart. A city rebuilt.

The aim of The Newburgh Project is to help revitalize and build up the Newburgh community through architecture, art, technology, gaming, history, design, and community partnerships.

Our first big project is a virtual re-creation of the city of Newburgh, NY, as it stood before Urban Renewal tore down over 1,300 buildings in the 1960s and 1970s. The model is built in Minecraft, so people all over the world can easily explore it, and it’s still a work in progress.

Newburgh wasn’t alone. Urban Renewal reshaped cities all across the country. To see what it did elsewhere, visit Segregation by Design, an atlas of before-and-after aerial photos documenting the neighborhoods lost to redlining, urban renewal, and highway construction.

Upcoming projects include Minecraft building classes at Newburgh Creates, community meetups, and various other events.
